CareFirst Public Forums
On September 5, Interim District of Columbia Corporation Counsel Arabella W. Teal invited interested residents and organizations to make presentations at two September public forums on the proposed conversion of CareFirst, Inc. and its affiliated organizations from nonprofit to for-profit status. The forums will also address the proposed subsequent acquisition of CareFirst by WellPoint Health Networks, Inc.
The public forums will be held Tuesday, September 24, from 7 to 10 pm at the Allen Chapel AME Church, 2498 Alabama Avenue, SE, and Thursday, September 26, from 7 to 10 pm in the auditorium on the First Floor South at the One Judiciary Square Building, 441 4th Street, NW.
Teal also announced the opening of a Public Document Room to enable interested residents and organizations to review information about the proposed conversion and sale. The Public Document Room is located in the Office of Corporation Counsel Law Library, Room 010 on Level C South of the One Judiciary Square Building, 441 4th Street, NW near the Judiciary Square Metro station.
The Office of the Corporation Counsel (OCC) is holding these public forums as part of its statutory responsibility to assess whether the charitable assets of CareFirst and its District of Columbia subsidiary, Group Hospitalization and Medical Services Inc. (GHMSI), would be adequately protected if the conversion is approved. OCC wishes to hear the public's view regarding the proposed conversion of GHMSI to for-profit status, the proposed acquisition of GHMSI by WellPoint, and the mission, scope of services, and governance and management structure of the charitable trust that would be funded if the conversion is approved.
